Gold & shops

Live

Money is real gold you carry. Players run the shops, through shop keepers that trade one item each.

Gold is money

There's no virtual balance. Gold is the currency, carried in your inventory:

UnitWorth
1 gold block9 bars = 81 nuggets
1 gold bar (ingot)9 nuggets
1 gold nugget1 nugget

Only plain gold counts. Renamed or enchanted gold doesn't. Change is given automatically, so if you pay with a bar for a 3-nugget item, you get 6 nuggets back.

Gold comes from the Outer Isles, where it's in the rock, and from panning streams anywhere. Because money has to be mined or panned, it's genuinely scarce.

Using a shop

Shops are run by shop keepers: NPCs that stand where their owner put them. Right-click one to trade.

  • Selling shops sell you an item. Click a price to buy. Items may come in bundles of 1, 8 or 64.
  • Buying shops buy an item from you. Click to sell them your goods for gold.

A purchase only goes through if everything fits in your inventory, so nothing is dropped or lost.

Running your own shop

  1. Stand where you want the keeper and run /shop create <name>.
  2. Right-click your keeper to set it up:
    • Pick the item by clicking it in your inventory. Each shop trades one item.
    • Choose the mode: Selling (you sell to customers) or Buying (you buy from them).
    • Set prices by clicking the blocks, bars and nuggets: left-click adds one, right-click takes one off.
    • Choose which bundles to offer: 1s, and optionally 8s and 64s.
  3. Selling: add stock, and come back to collect your takings.
Buying: deposit gold for the keeper to pay with, and collect what it has bought.

Stock and gold are held by the keeper, not in chests, so nobody can break in and take them. A shop holds up to 1,728 items (27 stacks) of stock.

Co-owners

A shop can have several owners. Any owner can restock, set prices and collect. Only the founder can close the shop, and it has to be empty first.

Limits

  • Up to 5 shops per player.
  • Prices go up to 99 gold blocks.

Trade between lands

Shops make most sense where the trade routes meet. A Breadbasket farmer selling bread, a Rainlands smith buying coal, or a harbour-side keeper buying diamonds off Outer Isles miners are all how the world's economy is meant to work. See Lands & regions for who has what.
