Panning
LiveSwirl a bowl in a shallow gravel stream for gold, iron, flint and sand.
Every burn and stream with a gravel bed is a place to pan. It's slow, but it works anywhere in the world and it's the most reliable way to earn your first gold.
How to pan
- Hold a bowl.
- Find shallow inland water, at most 2 blocks deep, above sea level, over a natural gravel bed.
- Right-click the water (within 5 blocks). You'll see Panning… above your hotbar.
- Hold still for 5 seconds. Moving more than a block and a half, or switching away from the bowl, cancels it.

- Your bowl breaks 8% of the time.
- Each pan has a 15% chance to wear the gravel out, turning it to coarse dirt. Move along the stream when it does.
Natural gravel only
Gravel you placed yourself doesn't pan, and the sea doesn't either. You're working the stream, not a gravel pile.
Sand
You can't gather natural sand by hand. Breaking beach sand drops nothing, which keeps the coastline intact. Panning is where sand comes from, and at 90% of results a patient panner can supply a glassworks. Sand you placed yourself can be picked back up as normal.
Feathers
Not panning, but it's another small source worth knowing: adult chickens drop 2–3 feathers, and wild birds drop 3–6.
