Lands & regions
LiveFive lands, fifteen regions. Each land has its own climate, ores, crops and animals, and none of them has everything.
The Caeldun Isles are divided into five lands. A land decides what grows, what you can dig up and what lives there. Within each land are named regions, each with its own character.
Outer Isles
Windswept, treeless. Diamond, redstone, a little gold.
Northlands
Pinewood and mountains. Coal, quartz, amethyst, lava.
Spiderholme Isles
Fern islands on the abyss. Lapis. The only pumpkins and chickens.
Breadbasket
Warm and flat. Wheat and most crops. Emerald.
Rainlands
Ancient oakwood. Rich iron. Wheat barely grows.
The Outer Isles
- Climate
- Cold and windswept. Almost no trees; heather over bare rock, machair and white-sand beaches in the west, high sea cliffs in the east.
- Crops
- Potato and beetroot.
- Ores
- Diamond and redstone deep down; gold in a few places, and a little gold anywhere you dig. Trace coal and copper.
- Animals
- Wild sheep, wild horses and donkeys, rabbits. Bears and wolves at lower numbers. Barren skeletons and native tribes roam the moors.
| # | Region | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fearnmuir | A long chain of low, loch-riddled islands |
| 2 | Dunbarra | A rugged island group around the harbour of Castleross |
| 15 | The Burning Isle | See below. |
The Northlands
- Climate
- Cool, with a low snowline and dense forest: old pinewood in the north, old oakwood around the jagged southern mountains.
- Crops
- Potato and beetroot.
- Ores
- Coal is common and quartz fairly common. Amethyst, sulfur and cinnabar veins line the caves. The only lava in the world is here. Iron and copper are very rare. Folded layers of granite, diorite, andesite, tuff and basalt run under the surface. Clay pockets surface as mud in the pinewoods.
- Animals
- Wolves (in packs), brown bears, red deer, boar, wild goats, foxes, wildcats, frogs and giant bull frogs by the water, eagles overhead. Spirits haunt the high ground.
| # | Region | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Ardveil | Big pine forest under a long ridge of cliffs |
| 4 | Dùnross | Pinewood, moor and sea lochs in the north-west |
| 5 | Sgorrachan | Jagged mountains, oak woodland, tumbling burns and a rugged coast |
| 14 | Ardcarran | A remote peninsula on the eastern mainland. Also has lapis, a little iron and emerald. |
The Spiderholme Isles
- Climate
- Cool and forested like the Northlands. The islands sit on the edge of the abyss: open alder and oak wood low down, fern and grass on the hills.
- Crops
- Potato, beetroot and pumpkin. These are the only isles in the world where pumpkins grow.
- Ores
- Lapis lazuli, deep. No real coal or iron, only traces.
- Animals
- Chickens live here and nowhere else. Here they're black grouse. Giant spiders infest the woods of Maigor. No wolves, no bears. Whales and giant squid in the deep water offshore.
| # | Region | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | Ruannis | A mountainous island |
| 7 | Maigor | A small island of cliffs and dark woods |
| 8 | Cannoch | Fern and alder island at the edge of the abyss |
The Breadbasket
- Climate
- The warmest isles: flat, fertile and sunny by local standards. Golden meadows, sheltered palms and cordylines, sandy coves and hundreds of small ponds.
- Crops
- Every crop but pumpkin grows here: wheat, potato, carrot, beetroot, melon and sugar cane. The only place wheat grows at full speed.
- Ores
- Emerald, deep. A little copper in pockets, sometimes showing in surface boulders. Coal and iron are extremely rare.
- Animals
- Farm country: cattle, chickens and pigs. On the islands themselves, no large predators and no hostile humanoids. Instead there are crabs, toads, newts, foxes, muntjac, island boar, palm spiders, and clouds of mosquitoes and midges.
| # | Region | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | Colvane | A low, rocky farming island |
| 10 | Tirwenn | The Golden Coast, where new settlers arrive |
The Rainlands
- Climate
- Milder and wetter, with a higher snowline than the north. Ancient oak wood covers the lowland: huge old trees, deep shade, fallen trunks and mushrooms. Open hills and rocky tops above.
- Crops
- Potato and beetroot at full speed. Wheat grows extremely slowly, at 1% of the normal rate.
- Ores
- Rich in iron, at vanilla levels. Copper and coal are very low.
- Animals
- Wolves, brown bears, red deer, boar, wild goats, foxes, frogs and newts. Spirits on the high ground.
| # | Region | Character |
|---|---|---|
| 11 | Morvethan | The most mountainous region, with the highest peak in the world |
| 12 | Ionfarr | Ancient oakwood over a long, low peninsula |
| 13 | Ardnamor | A wild peninsula reaching out to the west |
The Burning Isle
At the far northern end of the Outer Isles lies an island unlike anything else in the Caeldun Isles. Sheer cliffs about 60 blocks high ring the coast. Inland, the grass gives way to cinders, blackstone and magma, with fires burning and cracks glowing with lava. There's no rain, only falling ash under a dark sky. Below are huge flat cave halls and lava.
It's home to hell toads, blood bats, blazes and, at its heart, a dragon. Go well armed, and remember that you'll need a ship to get there.
This is the most dangerous place in the world, and there's no water to drink.
Why it's divided like this
Look at the lists together and the trade routes are obvious. The Rainlands have the iron but can't feed themselves. The Breadbasket can feed everyone but has almost no metal. Diamonds are on the barren Outer Isles, and every chicken (and every egg) comes from the Spiderholme Isles. See Resources for the full ore picture.
