Farming & crops

Live

Crops grow differently in every land. Potato and beetroot grow everywhere; everything else is regional.

Like ores, crops are regional. Each land has a list of what will grow there. Anything not on the list won't grow at all, and some crops on the list grow slowly.

Enforced in game

A crop won't grow outside the lands listed for it, and bone meal won't force it. Rainlands wheat keeps only 1 growth step in 100. Farms in the wrong land simply stop growing.

You can't place water

Water can't be poured from buckets or dispensers (see Banned & changed), so fields have to sit beside natural rivers, burns, ponds and lochs, or on a channel you've dug from one.

Why it matters

Bread is the main source of grains, and grains are one of your four nutrition meters. Outside the Breadbasket, nobody can grow wheat properly. The Rainlands can technically grow it, but a wheat field there takes a hundred times as long. That makes Breadbasket farmers some of the most important people in the world.

Every land can grow potatoes and beetroot at full speed, so everyone eats well for fruit and veg, and on hunting and fishing for protein. They just need to buy their bread.

Sugar cane

Sugar cane follows vanilla's rule: the block it stands on needs water directly beside it at the same level. On Tirwenn it grows wild along pond edges and streams.

Animals

Livestock is regional too. Chickens live only in the Spiderholme Isles. Sheep, horses and donkeys roam wild on the Outer Isles, and the Breadbasket is cattle, pig and chicken country. If you want a mixed farm, you'll have to bring animals home by ship. Ships carry penned animals safely, and horses have been tested at sea. See Ships.

Trees and saplings

Trees grow back. Saplings drop a little more often than in vanilla, and in the Caeldun worlds a sapling grows into the region's own tree shape rather than a vanilla one. A pine sapling in Ardveil grows into a proper tall pine, not a vanilla spruce. Saplings need light (level 9 or more) and take about 20 minutes on average. See Tree felling.
