Tree felling

Live

Cut through the trunk and the whole tree comes down. Watch where it lands.

Trees fall like trees. Chop through the trunk of a natural tree with an axe and everything above the cut topples away from you and crashes to the ground.

How it works

  • Break a log low on a natural tree with an axe and the rest of the trunk and crown falls.
  • The logs land as a lying trunk you can then cut up. Some logs splinter into sticks (up to 3 per tree).
  • Most of the crown shatters as it hits the ground, dropping sticks and saplings. What's left decays over the next minute or so.
  • Felling costs your axe 2 extra durability on top of the normal wear.
  • Sneak while chopping to take a single log the ordinary way.
Timber!

A falling trunk does 6 damage (3 hearts) to anything it lands on, you included. Stand to the side.

Limits

A felled tree can be up to 160 logs and 40 blocks tall above the cut. Bushes and tiny trees (fewer than 2 logs above the cut) are chopped normally. Trees you've built yourself from placed leaves don't fell; only natural ones do.

When you break a log without felling

If you remove logs the ordinary way, leaves that are no longer attached to anything fall away over about 25 seconds, as a real crown would. Leaves you placed yourself never fall.

Regrowth

  • Leaves drop saplings a bit more often than in vanilla.
  • In the Caeldun worlds, a sapling grows into the tree that belongs to the region, not a vanilla tree. Spruce saplings grow into proper tall pines, dark oak into alder or holly, jungle saplings into palms, and flowering azalea into rowan.
  • Saplings need light level 9 or more and take about 20 minutes on average to grow.
  • Bone meal works on saplings too, and grows the same regional tree.
  • Woodland slowly reseeds itself near existing trees. See The living world.
